Frequently Asked Questions
THE GAME
What is the Wine Smash game?
Our game allows you to test your tastebuds against our Wine Expert and your friends with the winner being crowned Champion Taster
Our expert has shared their six criteria for tasting wine (we call them the Pillars of Taste) and scored each Pillar between 1-5, you just need to taste and guess their scores.
Points are awarded for how close you are. The player with the most points wins!
How many players can join in?
The game can play with as many players as you'd like. The suggestion on the number of players is based on the amount of wine required to play. A Game Box (6 x 750ml bottles of wine) is suitable for 6 to 10 players to play.
We also have 2 players pack for more intimate groups (6 x 100ml wine - perfect for two).
What are the Pillars of Taste?
For Reds they are: Body, Ripeness, Oak, Alcohol, Tannins and Acidity
For Whites they are: Body, Ripeness, Oak, Alcohol, Sweetness and Acidity
Sounds complex! How can I taste those?
Don’t worry we will guide you through how to taste them and score as the game is played. We’ll have you tasting like a Pro in no time!
What's a good score?
Becoming a wine expert like Matt takes years! But playing the game, you should quickly notice you improve. Which is one of the aims of Wine Smash.
When we see a player score over 100 it always makes us double take!
Can I see how other people have scored?
We do have a UK wide leaderboard that can be accessed at the end of your game, so you can see how well you scored versus other players.
Don't worry - It only shows your chosen nickname and score.
We are awarding prizes weekly to certain players on the leaderboard who have accepted our marketing email. Because we can't email you otherwise!
As a wine newby will I like this?
Most who play are unsure on the first round but quickly pick up the tasting and the game soon becomes competitive with some unexpected results.
As a wine expert, will I like this?
Well, we hope so! It’s a different way to taste and have fun with friends but we have also stayed authentic to traditional wine tasting approaches with wine info, tasting notes and experts scores too.
Can I take notes on the wines?
Yes! In the game, you can record notes on what you think of the wine. At the end we can email you the name of the wines and the notes for your records.
Can I buy the wines I like?
Yes, please do! At the end of the game there is a link to our shop with the wines you have tasted. We will deliver them to you at an address of your choice.
THE GAME BOXES
How have you selected the Game Boxes?
We have a base of four Game Boxes – Welcome to Wine Smash, Classic Styles, Master Winemakers and Rose World Tour. This gives us a good scope of different wines to include in the boxes.
We add new boxes seasonally - e.g Spring Whites, Spring Red,
Our expert has used their knowledge to pick some cracking wines we hope you’ll love.
Are you going to add more?
We are adding games as we learn what customers want to taste. That may be a box from one winery, one country and one grape colour.
If you have suggestions for what you’d like to see please let us know via the “Get in Touch"
What else is in the Game Box?
We have a welcome drink which is a great way to practice before the game starts, a palette cleanser (a great popcorn choice), a Tiebreaker question and a prize for the winner.
Plus we have the usual wine info you’d expect at a tasting. For those who want to keep competing we have some Wine Smash trivia games.
Please share those winner’s (and runners up) photo’s with us.
How much wine should I serve in a tasting?
We find 50ml per serving is plenty to taste with and guess the scores. It also leaves you some to try again as you see the results.
Do I have to drink all the wine?
Of course not, placing a spittoon on the table is a good idea. If it’s not finished, the bottles can be resealed and shared amongst the players to drink an another day. Please Always Drink Responsibly.
THE WINE
How have you chosen the wine?
Our resident wine expert, Matt, is in charge of making sure only interesting wines are included in your game box.
Can I order single bottles of wine from you?
Yes! All our bottles are shown in the e-shop and include extra information and scoring by Matt.
THE 2 PLAYER GAME
Isn’t 6 bottles too much for a 2 player game?
Yes! We ask the team at ecoSIP to take the wine from each bottle and repackage it into 100ml packs for you (perfect for 2 people).
ecoSIP?
They are the UK experts at repackaging wine. Their packaging has a long shelf life, is SALSA Approved and is eco-friendly.
